Vinyl board and batten is affordable and low-maintenance in mild conditions, but it's a thin, flexible material that can warp or buckle with temperature swings, and its seams and battens are typically snapped or nailed with more play than a rigid material allows — not ideal when wind-driven rain is a regular event. Engineered wood products like LP SmartSide perform well when installation and maintenance are followed to the letter, but they're wood-based, and wood-based siding depends on an unbroken factory coating and diligent caulking to keep moisture out of the strand board core. In a climate with a long damp season and heavy moss pressure, that's a maintenance burden we don't think is fair to hand a homeowner without a serious conversation. Cedar board and batten is beautiful and has real heritage in this region, but solid wood siding requires ongoing refinishing, is a food source for moss and mildew, and its longevity depends heavily on how well it's ventilated and maintained year after year.
