Custer's Climate Is Harder on Siding Than It Looks
Custer sits in the northwest corner of Whatcom County, close enough to the Salish Sea that salt-laden marine air reaches almost every property in the area, even ones set back from the water on wooded or agricultural lots. Add in the long, wet Pacific Northwest winter and the moss and mildew pressure that comes with it, and you have a climate that is genuinely tough on exterior building materials — tougher than most manufacturers' marketing accounts for.
Three things do most of the damage over time:
- Salt air corrosion — airborne salt accelerates the breakdown of fasteners, trim, and paint film, especially on the weather-facing sides of a home.
- Driving rain — wind-driven storms push water sideways into seams, laps, and penetrations, not just straight down. Siding that isn't detailed for wind-driven rain will eventually let water behind it.
- Extended moss and mildew season — shaded, tree-covered lots (common around Custer) stay damp for months at a stretch, which feeds moss and algae growth on any surface that holds moisture.

Vinyl can warp and become brittle with UV and temperature swings and offers little resistance to wind-driven rain at the seams. Engineered wood siding depends entirely on an intact factory coating to keep moisture out — any breach, and the substrate is organic material that can swell and deteriorate. Cedar and primed spruce need ongoing refinishing to survive a wet climate like this one. None of those trade-offs make those products worthless everywhere, but for Custer's combination of salt air, driving rain, and long moss season, we don't think they hold up as well as fiber cement, and we'd rather install one product well than several products with caveats.

Fastening
Correct fastener type, spacing, and placement affect both wind resistance and long-term paint film integrity. In a coastal-influenced area, using the wrong fastener material invites corrosion staining down the face of the siding within a few years.
Caulking and Sealant Discipline
Sealant belongs at specific joints, not everywhere as a catch-all — over-caulking can trap moisture just as easily as under-caulking lets it in. Knowing the difference is part of doing this correctly.
